Screen Test (Americana)

2003 – 2005

Project Details
Screen Test (Americana)

The Screen Test (Americana) series is a cultural examinations of gender, narcissism and war — both real and imagined — and Hollywood is explored in terms of its social imaginings and how they play into real life events.

Selected fragments of film spanning cinema history are re-made, distilled into an iconic action, the repetition of which allows an alternate form of cinema to take place. There are similarities to a Hollywood screen test (or Warhol’s extended, unscripted screen tests), however over time, the aesthetic elements within the film shift, shaping the narrative as a form of aesthetic building block. Each re-performed fragment allows for a new reading of film that suspends or subverts the temporal narrative, and through that construction of new iconic images and meanings.

Screen Test #1 (Americana) is a playful performative experiment in gender and narcissism, in which John A Douglas reperforms an excerpt from Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard, The work was an ironic, humorous dig at (art) stardom and failure/success, resonating with his experience as an older artist of the tragedy of trying to fit into a youth obsessed art scene.

Building on this theme, Douglas recreated and reinterpreted the genres of the American Western and the War film within a contemporary context in Screen Test #2 and Screen Test #3, through use of Michael Crichton’s Westworld and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove.
